SFMOMA Honors Larry Sultan At Bay Area Treasure Luncheon Hosted By Modern Art Council

Release date: September 23, 2004

On Wednesday, November 17, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) will host the 2004 Bay Area Treasure Luncheon honoring artist Larry Sultan. Organized by the Modern Art Council, SFMOMA's premier fundraising auxiliary, this annual luncheon honors esteemed Bay Area artists. Sultan is the sixth honoree; he joins painters Nathan Oliveira and Robert Bechtle, industrial designer Sara Little Turnbull, architect Lawrence Halprin, and fellow photographer Ruth Bernhard.

Corey Keller, SFMOMA assistant curator of photography, will introduce special guest speaker and luncheon honoree Larry Sultan. Sultan lives and works in the Bay Area, but he was raised in the San Fernando Valley in a suburban tract home much like those he photographs in his series The Valley. Recently presented by SFMOMA in an acclaimed exhibition, The Valley comprises large-scale color photographs that explore the curious transformation of middle-class houses into sets for adult films. The fully-illustrated, hardcover catalogue produced in conjunction with the exhibition, Larry Sultan: The Valley (Scalo Press), will be available for signing at the luncheon. In his talk, Larry Sultan will address the scope of his work over the past twenty years.

Founded in 1935 as the first West Coast museum devoted to modern and contemporary art, SFMOMA is currently undergoing a major expansion project that will significantly enhance gallery, education, and public spaces, enabling the museum to better showcase more of its expanded permanent collection. While the museum is temporarily closed for construction,  through 2016, SFMOMA is “on the go” with an extensive array of off-site programming across the Bay Area, including collaborative and traveling museum exhibitions, major outdoor projects and commissioned installations, and new education initiatives.
