SFMOMA’S NOW PLAYING SERIES RETURNS FOR ITS FINAL INSTALLMENT OF THE SEASON

San Francisco- and Los Angeles- based multimedia art duo Los Jaichackers (Spanglish for hijackers) will transform SFMOMA into a sonic social laboratory on Thursday, May 31 for the museum's final Now Playing event of the season. Against the backdrop of SFMOMA's exhibition Photography in Mexico, Los Jaichackers present Double Grooves and Dirty Menudo, a series of performances centered on the intersection of music, history, and cultural phenomena in Mexico.

The evening plays out in four acts throughout the museum, featuring musical explorations, talks, and a multimedia video project by Los Jaichackers. Blue Bottle Coffee Co. will host "Ultima Banquete" in the Rooftop Garden, featuring vanilla cordials with St. George Spirits and paletas (colorful flavored ice pops), and beef and chicken empanadas with accompanying salsas by Bel Campo. Throughout the evening, The Schwab Room will host some of the city's best restaurants, including Trace (W Hotel), Rosamunde Sausage Grill, Blu, Radius, and Twenty Five Lusk, as they serve up complimentary bites.

Los Jaichackers Present CHUCHU SANTAMARÍA, Moises Medina, and Los Master Plus
Thursday, May 31, 2012, 6-9:45 p.m.

Act 1: Invader Cultures (Rooftop Pavilion, 6:15 p.m.): Provocateur and historian Moises Medina lectures on reverse appropriation, discussing First World culture and media, and Third World aesthetics and its treatment of new technology. The starting point is the Mexican musical phenomenon "Musica Tribal," a fusion of Aztec instrumentation with European techno music characterized by "Botas Picudas"(Pointy Boots), the trend of accessorizing cowboy boots with customized 24-inch tips.  

Act 2: Double Grooves (Phyllis Wattis Theater, 7:15 p.m.): Los Jaichackers' premiere their video and audio project A Fuego Lento II (Slow Burn II), which explores the musical compositions and legacy of Cuban bandleader Perez Prado, who is credited with inventing the mambo.

Act 3: Cover Versions (Haas Atrium, 8 p.m.): Oakland-based musical group CHUCHA SANTAMARÍA practice, perfect, and record a series of carefully crafted cover songs.

Act 4, Dirty Menudo (Haas Atrium, 9 p.m.): Guadalajara-based band Los Master Plus present the U.S. debut of their unique cumbiatrónica sounds, reworking the music of pop groups such as Daft Punk, Radiohead, and the Bee Gees.

SFMOMA: Now Playing is free with museum admission. Half-price Thursday-night tickets are available only in person at the museum starting at 6 p.m.
