Education And Music Programs Illuminate The Art Of Paul Klee At SFMOMA

A Passion for Paul Klee: The Djerassi Collection at SFMOMA is on view through June 8, 2003 at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA). Klee's artistic and musical connections are explored in the following programs:

Lecture

Thursday, May 1 • 7 p.m. • Phyllis Wattis Theater
The Art of Paul Klee and His Contemporaries
Beth Dungan, art historian

Dungan discusses many of the works on view in investigating Klee's interest in abstraction and his use of line. She will draw connections between Klee and Pablo Picasso, Vassily Kandinsky and Piet Mondrian.

Visual Sounds: Music and the Art of Paul Klee
K. Porter Aichele, professor of art history and museum studies, University of North Carolina, Greensboro; Peter Grundberg, pianist and music educator, San Francisco Symphony; Susan Key, program coordinator, San Francisco Symphony

Klee specialist Aichele and musicians from the San Francisco Symphony present a program of images, music and conversation addressing Klee's musical connections in three parts: Klee's interest in Mozart and other classical music, music of Germany's Weimar Period and music composed in response to Klee's art.

The Djerassi Collection of work by Swiss Modernist Paul Klee—assembled by Dr. Carl Djerassi and placed in SFMOMA's care—is seen in full for the first time ever in this exhibition. Artworks in the collection, most of which are on paper, reveal the spirit of investigation and experimentation Klee brought to his practice as a master of the 20th-century avant-garde. Spanning the years from 1885 to Klee's death in 1940, the 140 works on view include watercolors, drawings, etchings and lithographs.
