In the past couple of years, Yael Kanarek has emerged as one of the leading figures in the realm of online art experiments. She has been merging the esthetics of the desktop with those of the browser, pointing to the blurriness between that which is local and that which is remote in the realm of the network. Exploring storytelling schemes articulated with specific attention given to the design of multilayered user interfaces, she pioneers new fictional forms, which are more immersive than they are participatory. The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art has commissioned Yael Kanarek to produce a new chapter in World of Awe, the ongoing multi-dimensional tale the artist has been working on since 1995.

Perhaps the link between the works of Yael Kanarek and Lynn Hershman is the notion of multi-dimensionality. In speaking about Agent Ruby, Lynn Hershman uses the word "expanded cinema." This project indeed functions in relation to her feature film, Teknolust, and further explores the notions of multi-dimensional fictional structures, as carried out in a variety of media throughout her career. Echoing earlier experiments with telerobotics, this new project commissioned by SFMOMA is in direct relation to Synthia, an agent who derives her moods from the evolution of the stock market. Synthia is a project commissioned by Charles Schwab, Inc. Agent Ruby can be downloaded to your PDA (Palm OS only), and be beamed to another Palm user, just like any application.
