San Francisco-based Jim Campbell sits at the vanguard of electronic art, deftly merging his background as a filmmaker and an MIT-trained electrical engineer to create breathtaking installations of undulating light. His works challenge perception, simplifying and pixilating commonplace images to effect ethereal representations that continually shift between realism and abstraction.

Campbell's commissioned installation Exploded Views was the centerpiece of SFMOMA's Haas Atrium in 2012, when he also received the museum's Bay Area Treasure Award. His work is also included in the collections of SFMOMA, New York's Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, among others.
