Mark di Suvero is known the world over for producing imposing steel sculptures, as well as intimate works, that masterfully balance geometric form and a powerful sense of harmony. Favoring utilitarian materials and tools borrowed from architecture — I beams, cranes, welding equipment — he manipulates seemingly unruly elements to craft works that often exude a dynamic movement that belies their heft.

This spring eight of di Suvero's outdoor sculptures will be installed in a yearlong display at Crissy Field through a partnership between SFMOMA, the National Park Service, and the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy. His sculptures have earned him innumerable accolades throughout his career, including the prestigious Heinz Award in the Arts and Humanities, the International Sculpture Center's Lifetime Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture Award, and the 2010 National Medal of Arts.
