The subject of a blockbuster retrospective at SFMOMA last year, Cindy Sherman has wowed viewers with inventive, incisive, and alluring self-portraits for nearly four decades. Playing the role of photographer, model, makeup artist, costumer, hair stylist, set decorator, and editor, she casts herself as a staggeringly broad range of characters — from housewives to centerfolds, from clowns to Old Master subjects — to highlight the mutable and illusory nature of identity. Sherman's attention to detail is remarkable, lending each picture a palpable realism and conjuring realms both comic and tragic.
Winner of a 1995 MacArthur Fellowship, Sherman is widely heralded among the most influential artists of our time and is represented in the collections of SFMOMA, Tate, the Centre Pompidou, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and New York's Museum of Modern Art.
