James Welling's artworks vary widely in medium and style, but the consistent thread that runs throughout is his compulsion to experiment and to challenge convention. No surprise then that he was right at home as part of the 2011 SFMOMA exhibition ParaDesign, which highlighted objects from the architecture and design collection that question standards of design.
A longtime resident of Southern California and head of UCLA's photography department, Welling has participated in the Whitney Biennial and Documenta, and he was the subject of a major traveling survey in 2000, organized by the Wexner Center for the Arts. Welling's work is represented in the collections of SFMOMA, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Centre Pompidou, the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, among others.
