The subject of a 2012 traveling retrospective co-organized by SFMOMA, Dutch artist Rineke Dijkstra captivates viewers with large-scale portraits that simultaneously showcase incredible vulnerability and unexpected power. Her subjects are captured during periods of transition, their awkwardness drawn out in the lengthy exposure times required by her large-format camera. In her Park Portraits, she links decidedly contemporary depictions to art historical compositions, referencing a traditional painterly style and setting.
SFMOMA has recently expanded its holdings of Dijkstra's pictures, including them as a key segment in its prestigious photography collection. Her work is also in the collections of Tate in Britain, the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, New York's Museum of Modern Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
