SFMOMA Expansion Augmented Reality App

SFMOMA Expansion Augmented Reality App

Experience a creative reimagining of SFMOMA's future building through an artist-conceived augmented reality mobile application. Developed by Brooklyn-based duo Will Pappenheimer and John Craig Freeman, the public art "app-arition" is both an interactive and an animated assemblage of the building's various parts, reflecting its potential existence as a fluid network and beacon for the surrounding community.

Download Instructions

SFMOMA AR allows you to see a creative interpretation of the museum's expansion through your smartphone or tablet!

1. Download the free Layar augmented reality browser app to your iPhone, iPad, or Android device.

2. Read the QR code, then click the URL button to enter the AR (augmented reality) view, OR launch the Layar app and search under "Geo Layers" for "SFMOMA."

3. Once in the AR view, point your phone or tablet toward SFMOMA's current building and/or construction site to view an artistic reflection on the virtual building. Use the touchscreen on your device to change the configuration of images.

Will Pappenheimer and John Craig Freeman work with emergent forms of augmented reality as interventionist public art. They engage the medium as a way of transforming public space and institutions by installing virtual objects and artworks. Recent commissions include augmented reality works for Hans Richter: Encounters at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (2013); the Boston Institute of Contemporary Art during the Boston Cyberarts Festival (2011); Kunsthallen Nikolaj, Copenhagen Contemporary Art Center (2012); and the 2012 ZERO1 Biennial in San Jose. The artists are members of the international artists’ collective Manifest.AR.
