La Chienne (The Bitch)
Phyllis Wattis Theater
1931, 95 min.
6:30 p.m.
The great Michel Simon plays Maurice Legrand, an unhappily married, mild-mannered office worker and amateur painter who falls in love with the disreputable Lulu. Lulu and her drunken pimp, Dédé, exploit Legrand for his money and his art. Renoir's first masterpiece of the era of talkies is a mixture of comedy and social commentary, a sharp critique of hypocrisy, greed, and the class system.
Part of Jean Renoir in the Thirties.
