Canadian artist Jeff Wall's groundbreaking photographic work evokes both the cinema screen and the grandest history paintings, deftly mining picture-making traditions, imaging technology, and avant-garde innovation. Says the artist, "I realized that there was something that Manet did that I wanted to do - he came into a relation with tradition without continuing it."
