Overview

Le voyage du ballon rouge (Flight of the Red Balloon), Hou Hsiao-hsien, 2008, 115 min., 35mm
French with English subtitles

Taiwanese master Hou pays homage to Lamorisse's The Red Balloon. Juliette Binoche gives a powerful performance as Suzanne, a single mother and professional puppeteer who hires Song (Song Fang), a young Taiwanese film student, to care for her son. Filmed in 10-minute, unrehearsed takes, and shot using only natural light, this is a gentle, stunning ode to Paris and childhood.
