Overview

Eve Sussman, 2009-11, running time variable, digital video

Sussman's whiteonwhite:algorithmicnoir becomes a new, unique film with each screening. The overarching narrative remains constant — a geophysicist in "City-A", a utopia in decline, tries to unravel the methods and motives of his shadowy new employer — but the manner in which the story unfolds is in flux. The work is live-edited by a computer, dubbed the "Serendipity Machine," which is guided by algorithm and chance to assemble the film from thousands of video and sound fragments. As poetic juxtapositions emerge, the viewer completes the storytelling process.

Don't miss the panel discussion with Eve Sussman and collaborators from the Rufus Corporation following the September 27, 2012 screening.
