Change, Uncertainty, and Ambiguity: The Photographs of Shomei Tomatsu
Date + Time
Friday, July 28, 2006
noon - 1:00 p.m.
Location
Koret Visitor Education Center
Overview
Tomatsu came of age in postwar Japan, amid a culture shattered by World War II. His photographs of people, cities, and landscapes respond to momentous events, but in a poetic style. Tomatsu's pictures are expressive, symbolic, and deliberately ambiguous rather than simply documentary. Join Gand in an exploration of Tomatsu's distinctive visual language, considering the transformations of his art and his culture over a span of 50 years. The discussion will include a visit to the galleries to engage closely with the photographs.
