British artist Steve McQueen (b. 1969) embraces the luminosity and narrative traditions of filmmaking in room-sized, projected video installations that immerse the viewer in the cinematic experience. SFMOMA is the first museum in the United States to present McQueen's projects, in an exhibition organized by Robert R. Riley, SFMOMA curator of media arts. The works in the exhibition — Bear (1993), Five Easy Pieces (1995), Just Above My Head (1996), and Catch (1997) — are film-to-video transfers, projected continuously, that explore the emotional and psychological content inherent to the moving image.

This exhibition is made possible by the James C. Hormel Fund.
