Collection The DeCarava Archive
Over the course of five decades, Roy DeCarava (b. 1919) has produced a remarkable body of photographic work that poignantly and precisely depicts his native New York neighborhoods and the local writers, artists, and musicians who have become cultural icons over the years. Serene portraits of friends and family members, lonely street scenes isolating a single figure against a city backdrop, peaceful still lifes quietly illuminated by a single light source, and captivating pictures of jazz musicians suspended in mid-note will be on view in Roy DeCarava: A Retrospective. The exhibition, the largest and most comprehensive survey of DeCarava's work to date, was organized by the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
Merrill Lynch is the sponsor of the San Francisco presentation of this exhibition. Roy DeCarava: A Retrospective, organized by the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and its accompanying publication were supported by a grant from Metropolitan Life Foundation. Additional funding was provided by Agnes Gund and Daniel Shapiro, and the National Endowment for the Arts.
