Tauba AuerbachAmerican (San Francisco, California, 1981)
Tauba Auerbach creates paintings, drawings, and graphic work that investigate language as a complex system of symbols and forms. She confronts the limitations and possibilities of written communication, concentrating on the gap between the visual appearance of words or letters and the meanings that we ascribe to them. Her practice includes a deep formal meditation on individual letters, an interest heightened by her time working as a sign painter just after college. "I feel as though I know each letter intimately — its shortcomings and its tendencies," she has said, "I feel close to them."
A Bay Area native and graduate of Stanford University, Auerbach lives and works in San Francisco.
