Installation View

This installation view of the SFMOMA exhibition Treasures of Modern Art: The Legacy of Phyllis Wattis (January 30–June 24, 2003) shows Automobile Tire Print on the wall at right. Rauschenberg’s Pyramid Series (1974) is partially visible at left, and Trophy IV (for John Cage) (1961) is installed at the center of the gallery. Rauschenberg had a close collaborative relationship with composer John Cage (1912–1992), who helped created Automobile Tire Print by driving his Model A Ford over twenty joined sheets of paper under Rauschenberg’s direction. The tire tread found near the blue painted area on Trophy IV (for John Cage) references this collaboration. The support of Phyllis Wattis, the SFMOMA benefactor honored by the exhibition, enabled the museum to acquire all three works pictured here along with eleven others directly from the artist in 1998.
