According to this registry page from Leo Castelli Gallery, New York, Erased de Kooning Drawing (1953) was on consignment there for $500 from March through October of 1958. Rauschenberg’s first solo exhibition at the gallery took place March 4–29 of that year, and it’s likely that Castelli held the drawing in his inventory afterward in the hope that the exhibition would prompt its sale. After Erased de Kooning Drawing was returned to the artist, he kept it until it was bought by SFMOMA in 1998.
