Seen from the back, the simple box construction of Untitled (ca. 1955) reveals little about the complex surface it supports. The work bears no exhibition labels; it was held in the artist’s collection and was not shown until the exhibition Robert Rauschenberg: A Retrospective, organized by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York (September 19, 1997–January 7, 1998).
