Trophy IV (for John Cage) was exhibited for the first time in Rauschenberg’s 1961 solo exhibition at Leo Castelli Gallery, New York. This installation view shows the sculpture with (from left) 193466, Co-existence, and Pantomime (all 1961). Both Pantomime and Trophy IV (for John Cage) incorporate movement: the fans in Pantomine can be turned on, while the boot in Trophy IV (for John Cage) is designed to be swung. In this showing, which opened shortly after Rauschenberg completed Trophy IV (for John Cage), the piece does not include the flashlight that is now chained to its metal pole. Other archival and published views of the sculpture without the flashlight are also available in this section.
