Making Sense of Modern Art: The Early 20th Century

Making Sense of Modern Art offers an extensive and engaging guide to modern and contemporary works in SFMOMA's permanent collection. This section of the program explores the art scene of the early 20th century, a time marked by the perpetual reinvention and reinterpretation of art's social role and formal properties. Liberated by photography from the task of reproducing the visible world, the avant-garde artists of the early 20th century vied with one another to define pathways for art that met the challenges of a newly progressive cultural moment.
