Artist Zarouhie Abdalian reflects on her SFMOMA commission, a sound installation featuring brass bells that have been programmed to ring simultaneously from rooftops radiating out from Oakland's Frank H. Ogawa Plaza. Each bell plays a randomized rhythmic structure of accelerated and slowed tempos that is different every time. With this experience-based work, Abdalian hopes to shift our awareness of Oakland's city center, a historic site associated with community gathering.
This is one of four off-site SECA projects commissioned as part of the 2012 SECA Art Award exhibition; the closing date for Occasional Music has been extended to January 20, 2014. For more information, including hours and directions, visit the exhibition page.
