Artist Sophie Calle reflects on the voyeuristic fascination with the lives of others that inspired The Hotel, a project she created in the early 1980s while posing as a chambermaid at a hotel in Venice. There are twelve works in the series, one for every room she was assigned to clean. Each work includes a grid of photographs of the personal belongings she found in the room, a larger photograph of the bed, and text by the artist that offers her imaginative interpretation of the absent guests.
