This time-lapse video shows how SFMOMA visitors interacted with Robert Rauschenberg's White Painting [three panel] (1951) during a one-week period when the work was installed as part of the exhibition 75 Years of Looking Forward: The Anniversary Show (the painting was on view July 1, 2010–January 16, 2011). Rauschenberg conceived of his White Paintings as pristine surfaces that invited the interplay of light and shadow; however, the highly controlled light levels in the museum setting limit the opportunity for dramatic changes in lighting. This video captures the other forms of interaction invited by White Painting [three panel], documenting visitors as they repond to the painting and to the presence of the camera, sometimes in unexpected ways.
