Our docents have fun while bringing art to life for museum visitors. The training program features in-depth courses in modern and contemporary art as well as instruction in touring methods and techniques. Participants explore a variety of ways to lead visitors — the general public, teens, and school groups — through our wide-ranging exhibitions.

SFMOMA docent benefits include:

  • A continuing education in modern and contemporary art
  • Exhibition walk-throughs with curators, artists, and scholars
  • Lectures and workshops about current exhibitions
  • Free tickets to various SFMOMA events and programs
  • Connections with others who share an interest in modern and contemporary art
  • The opportunity to support SFMOMA through volunteering

Requirements for participation in the SFMOMA docent training program are:

  • An interest in modern and contemporary art and enthusiasm for engaging with the public
  • SFMOMA membership
  • A one-time class fee (some partial scholarships are available)
  • Attendance at all training classes
