SFMOMA Museum Guides

The primary purpose of the SFMOMA museum guides is to inspire museum visitors through interactive, participatory experiences. Every day, guides have opportunities to initiate dialogues, foster discoveries, share insights, and open the eyes and minds of our visitors. They are also active participants in the stimulating learning environment of SFMOMA, with unique access to the art and knowledge that the museum continually aggregates, not to mention the thought-provoking comments and questions of our visitors!

For information on working with students, visit our school tours page. For information on working with general audiences, visit our public tours page.

We are no longer accepting applications for our 2015-2016 training class. If you are interested in hearing about future museum guide training classes, please email

We invite people of all backgrounds, interests, and skills to become museum guides at SFMOMA. We want our guides to reflect the diversity of the Bay Area, representing a variety of lifestyles and corners of the globe. And since our visitors hail from around the world and throughout the region, we especially love having guides who can speak multiple languages! (Spanish/English- and Mandarin or Cantonese/English-speakers are particularly helpful.)

Interview Process

All applications are reviewed by SFMOMA staff. Select candidates will be invited to participate in group interviews with education staff and a panel of current museum guides. Successful applicants will be invited to become part of the training class that begins in September 2015.

Museum Guide Training at SFMOMA

SFMOMA museum guide training is a two-part program with SFMOMA staff and guest instructors. Through participation in lectures and workshops, guides-in-training will become familiar with the museum's collection, pedagogy, and interpretation techniques.

In an effort to reasonably accommodate guides' schedules, training will include morning and evening sessions, as well as select Saturday sessions.

Because of the in-depth training and advance scheduling involved, we request that guides agree to minimum annual tour commitments, as well as a minimum term of one year.

We expect our guides to stay curious about the art for our time and to participate in SFMOMA's new continuing education program. Museum guides also are expected to stay up-to-date on the museum's exhibition schedule and to attend regular curator-led walk-throughs of the museum's exhibitions. Additional support is provided through special skills trainings and regular professional reviews, allowing guides to continue to grow and develop their interpretation techniques.

SFMOMA museum guides are a much-respected, skillful, and creative group. We thank you for your interest in joining us and look forward to your application!
