Housed in a light-filled, two-story space in the historic Fort Mason complex, the SFMOMA Artists Gallery is a professional resource for renting, buying, and viewing affordable, original art.

The gallery's inventory encompasses a variety of styles and media and represents more than 800 emerging and established Northern California artists, many of whom have national and international followings.

Art Rentals
The Artists Gallery's rental program provides access to affordable fine art without the pressure of commitment. Whether looking to dress up the walls of a business or a studio apartment, established collectors and art novices alike can choose among a variety of works in a friendly, informal environment.

Art Consulting
The working artists and arts professionals on the Artists Gallery staff are available for consultations by appointment or on the spot.

Off-Site Exhibitions
The Artists Gallery can organize exhibitions for public and private spaces, with its staff assisting with selection, transportation, and installation of art through local art handlers when needed.

Overview and History
The gallery was founded in 1978 by Marian Parmenter and Sally Lilienthal, who envisioned an innovative rental program that offered works of art — paintings, sculptures, photographs, and works on paper — for rent with the option to buy. The goal was to serve both artists and collectors: give artists financial support and the opportunity to exhibit their work and provide collectors at every level an affordable avenue for collecting original works.

The gallery hosts eight exhibitions each year and highlights a full range of works, from traditional still-life paintings to multimedia pieces. An annual Sale is held once a year in the Spring.

Profits from Artists Gallery rentals and sales support participating artists as well as exhibition and educational programming at SFMOMA, nurturing local artists and enriching the cultural landscape of the Bay Area.
