Where Art Can Take You: The Campaign to Transform SFMOMA will open our building to our visitors in new and surprising ways. It sets in motion an enhanced visitor experience.

The centerpiece of SFMOMA's expansion is the remarkable building design developed in collaboration with the architectural firm Snøhetta. Slated to open in early 2016, the approximately 235,000-square-foot expansion will seamlessly join the existing Mario Botta-designed building with a new addition spanning from Minna to Howard Streets. It will more than double our current capacity for the presentation of art, and will provide almost six times as much public space as our current building.

With easier public access and more flexible galleries to accommodate the display of more of our collection and large-scale works of art, the new SFMOMA will provide visitors with a transparent experience of modern and contemporary art. The transformative design includes:

We will use technology to enhance the visitor experience as well. Increasing access also means being more accessible through digital technologies, in particular the next generation of mobile technologies.

Our goals are to offer our audience as many digital ways into the collection as possible, and to use technology to help visitors before, during, and after their visit to the museum. Digital technology can help people less familiar with contemporary art find a comfortable starting point to experience its challenges and rewards. It can bring relevance, customization, and context to enhance the power of an individual experience with art.
