Art can transform lives. It provokes us to think, to express, to explore our own creativity, to envision new possibilities. Our role as a museum of modern art is to offer multiple ways to inspire, to educate, and to entertain. And to succeed, we need a museum that is open — to questions, to discovery, to interpretation, to the future.
In every way, SFMOMA has outgrown its current home. With an expanding collection and robust programming attracting a steadily increasing number of visitors, there is simply not enough room for presenting art, nor for the experiences of art that people want and deserve. To realize SFMOMA's full potential, we must pursue a new kind of museum experience, a model that puts audience side by side with the art itself.
Where Art Can Take You: The Campaign to Transform SFMOMA will expand the museum building to provide a better experience for our visitors and a better home for our expanding collections, including both the SFMOMA collection and the Fisher Collection, one of the finest collections of contemporary art in the world. The new SFMOMA, designed in collaboration with the architecture firm Snøhetta, is scheduled to open in early 2016.
With this project, we are transforming not just the museum's physical presence, but also our contributions to the community, enhancing SFMOMA's role as a place for learning, inspiration, and interaction for visitors from the Bay Area and beyond. We are making SFMOMA a magnet for contemporary art and for the audiences who will engage with it.
In expanding the museum, we are motivated by four compelling goals:
In support of these goals, we seek to raise $610 million.
SFMOMA quietly launched its campaign in early 2010; driven by generous support from the Board of Trustees, the museum announced to the public on May 8, 2013, that it was raising the campaign goal to $610 million. The campaign has succeeded due to the extraordinary support of our Board and close friends. To date we have raised $545 million, or 89 percent of our goal.
The vibrant future of SFMOMA that we envision depends upon the support of our entire community. Each gift, however large or small, will have an impact on the future of modern art.
