Beginning with the Knotted Chair, a piece he designed for Droog Design in 1996, Marcel Wanders has infused the world of industrial design with Droog's trademark high-concept, dry-humored wit and his own brand of disturbing yet beautiful construction.

Wanders grew up in Boxtel, Holland, and graduated from the Academy of Arts in Arnhem in 1988. He was one of Droog's original members before founding his first firm, Wanders Wonders, in 1995. It was at this point in his career that he designed the Knotted Chair, a seat of hand-knotted rope soaked in glue. He founded Moooi — named after an intensified version of mooi, the Dutch word for "beautiful" — in 2000. Since then he has designed numerous pieces for Cappellini, as well as the WanderDuck line of bags for Mandarina Duck and the interiors for the label's flagship store in London.

Wanders also works on architectural and interior design projects and has more recently turned his hand to designing home appliances.
