Photographer Kikuji Kawada discusses Chizu (The Map) (1960–65), his series on the Atomic Bomb Dome in Hiroshima, the Japanese military, and the post–World War II economic boom in Japan. He describes how he was able to capture sublime and sometimes terrifying aspects of these subjects through abstracted detail.
