Into the blue with Raad

NARRATOR: The day was September 11th, 2001. The world looked on in shock as the Manhattan skyline filled with smoke and ash. In the days, then years, that followed, artist Walid Raad noticed something peculiar about what eyewitnesses said about that horrific day. They recalled one detail in particular—the beautiful blue of the sky.

SFX: Ethereal music, slow, dreamy

NARRATOR: How would you pin down a color that you can only dimly recall, from a day when so many other things happened?

SFX: More of the music

NARRATOR: Raad says that he can’t remember the exact color of the sky on that September day, but each of these ninety-six shades represents a possibility.

SFX: More of the music

NARRATOR: “For some reason,” Raad wrote, “I needed to see that blue again.”
