A reflection by artist Marc D’Estout

MARC D’ESTOUT: The first thing I notice when I’m looking at the De Maria pieces is the surface quality. They’re stainless steel, they’re highly polished, and that alone gives off quite an energy.

I’m Marc D’Estout. I’m a sculptor and I work primarily in metal.

There’s something very seductive about a polished metal surface. You almost see past the surface of the metal itself. The reflections from the light in the room change as you walk around the piece. And as the light changes, the surface structure changes.

The thing about this piece is that it can be reconfigured. So, in a way, it’s not just a sculpture, but it’s interactive. It becomes kind of a performance piece in a way. And since I learned that Walter De Maria was the first drummer for Velvet Underground, before Mo Tucker, this actually kind of adds to the content for me, because I can see the musical influence in the bars and even the drum sticks and the movement and the energy.
