This somber oil painting by Pablo Picasso from 1900 measures approximately one and a half feet high by two feet wide. It depicts a street scene in the Montmartre neighborhood, at the time an outlying district of Paris. On our left, a slouching man with white hair and a paunch is clad in black pants and a dull brown jacket; his hands are plunged in his pockets as he looks away from us and down toward the center of the painting. There, a woman and child are seen from behind, walking together, also clad in somber earth tones. The woman carries a basket in one hand and holds the child’s hand with the other as they face the terrain of sloping streets and small houses. All is muted, quiet, and the sky is gray, except for the upper stories of a few taller buildings in the rear, which take on a mustard color in the late day sun.
