description of Madeleine, I by Henri Matisse

This cast bronze statue stands less than two feet tall, and depicts a curvy nude woman with no [one? ill defined?] arms. She stands with her head and hip cocked to her left, giving her body a deep S curve. Her legs are short, her knees touching, and her belly small and round. He breasts are lumpy and irregular, and may in fact represent a truncated arm reaching across her chest. She has no discernible facial features, but her hair has been pulled into a bun at the top of her head. The cast bronze has a smooth, soft texture, like water running over hand-molded clay, and at the base of the sculpture, the woman’s feet appear to melt into the irregular oval plinth on which she stands.
