description of Black Place I by Georgia O'Keeffe

Two rows of velvety, grey hills fill this smooth oil painting. The gentle, curving shapes resemble two lines of sleeping elephants, with soft, rolling humps of grey flesh piled one behind the other. The rows meet in a valley that runs vertically down the middle of the nearly square canvas. The hills are depicted in contrasting shades of silver and grey, but tiny tufts of muted olive green peek out between the hills near the top of the painting, and a hint of pink can be found in the foreground mountains, at the bottom of the canvas.
