description of PH-58 by Clyfford Still

Flat, black, oil paint covers this almost seven-foot-tall, six-foot wide canvas. The darkness is near total, but a closer inspection reveals hints of dim light. A dappling of gray enters the painting at our upper right, like weak light filtering down into a dark hole. Vertical marks from the artist’s palette knife add to the pit-like atmosphere. A thin trickle of crimson paint is also discernible near our upper right. At the lower left a small patch of crimson dribbles down from the edge of the canvas and pools at the bottom, as if slowly filling the lowest corner of the pit.
