description of Berkeley #57 by Richard Diebenkorn

This nearly five-foot-square abstract oil painting features wild, discernible brushstrokes and a dominant gold tonality. The canvas has been loosely partitioned into six gently sloping, overlapping, horizontal bands. The bands feature patches of paint - some separate and distinct, others layered and blended - which differ greatly in color and texture. In our upper right hand corner is a patch of orange, underlined by a wavy blue line. Near the bottom left are patches of forest green, apple green, fleshy pink, and gold, which resemble farmers’ fields. Across the middle of the canvas is a belt of densely packed, frenetic patches, with loose forms, irregular black and red lines, and a wide array of colors.
