Remaking everyday objects through experimental processes

NARRATOR:

Polke seems to enjoy inventing new picture-making processes as much as he does exploring each new process he invents.

GARY GARRELS:

He has a very experimental attitude, a very playful attitude, very un-controlling. He probably did as much photography in the seventies as he did painting.

NARRATOR:

Curator Gary Garrels.

GARRELS:

He uses the photographic chemicals in these very unorthodox ways. And he also is interested in very primitive, early photographic techniques that were a direct transfer of an image onto a photosensitized plate. The photographs are very much about mundane, ordinary objects in a domestic household. But theyve been transformed into something maybe not spiritual, but freed from their mundane existence.

Theyve become animated and, uh, fragmented. And the idea of a domestic environment interior is now thrown open to the imagination.
