This poster was created to publicize Robert Rauschenberg’s Stoned Moon series, a group of thirty-four lithographs created in two phases in 1969 and 1970 in collaboration with Los Angeles–based print studio Gemini G.E.L. The series was commissioned by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Art Program to commemorate the launch of the Apollo 11 mission in July 1969. At NASA’s invitation, Rauschenberg attended the launch at Cape Canaveral, Florida (then known as Cape Kennedy), prior to beginning these works. The poster was made as Rauschenberg approached completion of the second (1970) phase of prints. Here the entire series appears in miniature, arranged against a backdrop composed from maps of the John F. Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral.
