Environment (Tribute 21) recognizes Al Gore (b. 1948), who served as United States vice president from 1993 to 2001. During that time Gore was a strong advocate for the environment, and he has continued to support environmental causes in the years since. On Earth Day 1994, he announced the forthcoming launch of the Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE) program, a science education program aimed at promoting environmental literacy and stewardship. This brochure joins a reproduction of Rauschenberg’s print with a quote by Gore that reads: “The key is indeed balance—balance between contemplation and action, individual concerns and commitment to the community, love for the natural world and love for our wondrous civilization.”
