American speedskater Bonnie Blair (b. 1964) is one of the most decorated athletes in Olympic history. When she competed in the Winter Olympic Games in February 1994, she won two gold medals, becoming the first American woman to win the gold five times. That same year, she was honored in Rauschenberg’s Sports (Tribute 21). In the brochure, his print is paired with the following quote by Blair: “I wish to teach others the joy that I have experienced. Sports combines dedication and personal discipline and is simply the best way I know how to bring people together.” The image on the brochure’s cover is rotated 180 degrees from the orientation of SFMOMA’s print (as indicated by the artist’s signature).
