In May 1999 Rauschenberg visited SFMOMA for the opening of an exhibition featuring fourteen major works by the artist that the museum had recently acquired. Phyllis Wattis, an influential and generous museum benefactor, had helped spearhead the remarkable purchase, which made SFMOMA a prime location for research on the artist. Rauschenberg is seen here in front of Port of Entry [Anagram (A Pun)] (1998), the most recently completed work among those acquired that year.
