description of Untitled by Robert Ryman

The front of this small, ten-inch-square canvas is entirely covered by a patch of creamy, off-white paint. The enamel paint is smooth and clean, and the only discernible texture is that of the canvas underneath. The edges of the square patch are hand painted and uneven, leaving a thin, irregular border of raw linen canvas that wraps around the sides of the one-and-a-half-inch deep frame. The natural linen is beige, the color of milky tea, and features a tight, sturdy weave. With no overt subject, the interplay between the raw canvas and the edge of the cream-colored square becomes the focus of this small, subtle painting.
