The thousands of artworks at SFMOMA offer countless opportunities to look closely and think deeply about some of the most amazing artists of our time. To celebrate both the artists on view in the newly expanded museum and the creative communities of the Bay Area, 50 Artists invites local artists and creative professionals to share how icons of modern and contemporary art matter to them. This week, SFMOMA’s own Gary Garrels presents on Felix Gonzalez-Torres.

Gary Garrels is Elise S. Haas Senior Curator of Painting and Sculpture at SFMOMA, a position he assumed in September 2008. Previous appointments include chief curator and deputy director of exhibitions and public programs, Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; Robert Lehman Foundation Chief Curator of Drawings and Curator of Painting and Sculpture, Museum of Modern Art, New York; Elise S. Haas Chief Curator of Painting and Sculpture, SFMOMA; senior curator, Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; and director of programs, Dia Art Foundation, New York. He has written and lectured extensively about contemporary art in the United States and Europe, and acts as an advisor to several major art foundations and organizations. Currently he is on the Board of Trustees of the Pulitzer Arts Foundation, Saint Louis.

To celebrate both the artists on view in the newly expanded museum and the creative communities of the Bay Area, join us for 50 Artists, an exciting new program taking place every Friday at noon for fifty weeks. Each week a local artist, designer, maker, thinker, performer, or writer shares how an icon of modern and contemporary art matters to them. This week, SFMOMA’s own Gary Garrels presents on Felix Gonzalez-Torres.
