Discovering Lee Miller

Thursday, July 3, 2008

6:30 p.m.

Participants

Antony Penrose, author and son of Lee Miller

Penrose describes his remarkable discovery of photographs and materials that Miller, retreating from her photographic work after the shock of World War II, had hidden away both from her family and the world. Penrose organized these prints and documents into the Lee Miller Archive, which he directs, and published two books – The Lives of Lee Miller (1995) and Lee Miller’s War (2005) – working tirelessly to reestablish and reexamine his mother’s artistic achievement. The program is followed by a screening of The Lives of Lee Miller (55 min.), Robin Lough’s 1985 documentary about the photographer based on Penrose’s research for his book of the same title.
