Featuring Rita Hayworth in her first major role, this film put her on the cover of Life magazine and made her the preeminent sex icon (and wartime pinup) of the day. It also marks the beginning of Astaire’s comeback after splitting with Rogers. Cole Porter supplies the music, which includes “Since I Kissed My Baby Goodbye.”

The Sky’s the Limit has a different tone than Astaire’s other films – still comic and romantic but somehow darker. In his first serious role, Astaire plays a fighter pilot on leave who falls for a photographer, played by Joan Leslie. The script is excellent and the dancing as fine as always, but the most famous scene must be Astaire’s rendition of “One for My Baby,” his favorite song to perform. The film also stars Robert Benchley and Robert Ryan.
