Huston’s Fat City is a compelling portrayal of working-class life and of those who lose out in the pursuit of the American Dream. It is the story of two boxers: Jeff Bridges, who is starting out as a fighter, and Stacey Keach, aging and alcoholic, who is attempting a comeback. The narrative is authentic and emotionally stirring – more Charles Bukowski than Rocky Balboa. One of the greats of American cinematography, Hall earned nine Oscar nominations – winning three times – over a 50-year career. He was especially noted for his artistry in handling light and shadows. His son Conrad W. Hall is also a noted cinematographer.
